La La Land has made history by winning an impressive seven prizes at this year’s Golden Globe Awards.

The Damien Chazelle-directed musical has set the new record for the most awards won by a single film, winning in every category that it was nominated in during Sunday night’s ceremony.

While Chazelle picked up the award for Best Director and Best Screenplay, both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone took home the top acting prizes.

The previous Golden Globes record was set back in the 1970s, with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Midnight Express winning six awards apiece.

Gosling thanked wife Eva Mendes as he collected his award, saying:

“'I would like to try to thank one person properly and say while I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I've ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer.

“If she hadn't have taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today. So sweetheart, thank you.”

French actress Isabelle Huppert beat Natalie Portman, Amy Adams, Ruth Negga and Jessica Chastain to win Best Actress in a drama for Elle.
