Brad Pitt was greeted with a very warm welcome as he made a surprise appearance at the Golden Globe Awards.

The A-lister, who wasn’t expected to take to the stage during Sunday night’s ceremony, was met with a huge round of applause and a standing ovation by his fellow actors as he introduced a clip from Moonlight.

In his first awards season appearance since his acrimonious split from wife Angelina Jolie, the 53-year-old was shown support by the Hollywood elite.

Friend Matt Damon appeared to cheer louder than anyone as Pitt arrived on stage, with the camera panning to him as he let out a huge ‘whoop’.

Introducing Moonlight, which went on to pick up the award for Best Picture – Drama, the actor said:

“It’s born of the courage of a group of actors willing to strip to their souls and express their humanism inside mistake and misstep and misdeed.

“It is Barry Jenkins’ profound belief that we all stand at the threshold of change and forgiveness where we only grant acceptance and love to ourselves.”

Pitt and Jolie ended their 11-year relationship in September last year following just two years of marriage.

They have since been locked in an on –going custody battle over their children Maddox, 15, Pax, 13, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10 and eight-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

Moonlight was one of the big winners during Sunday night’s ceremony, alongside Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, which swept the board with seven wins.
