British stars reigned at the Golden Globes in Hollywood, picking up five of the award’s top acting gongs.

Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman all won for their roles in the BBC’s espionage thriller The Night Manager.

Claire Foy collected the best television actress award for her acclaimed portrayal of the Queen in The Crown, the Netflix bio-drama exploring the monarch’s early days on the throne, which was also named best TV drama.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson was the surprise winner of his first Golden Globe - best supporting actor in a motion picture - for his role as an American redneck killer in Nocturnal Animals, directed by Tom Ford. The 26-year-old appeared earlier on the red carpet with wife Sam, 49.

But the film La La Land was the big winner of the night, sweeping a record seven awards, including best actor for Ryan Gosling and best actress for Emma Stone.

It is the most Golden Globes ever won by a film, beating out a five-way tie of movie classics including Doctor Zhivago (1965), Love Story (1970), The Godfather (1972), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), and A Star is Born (1976).

Foy, 32, described her win for best actress in a TV drama as “an out of body experience.”

She paid tribute to the Queen. “I really wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for some extraordinary women, one is Queen Elizabeth II,” she said. “She has been at the centre of the world the past 63 years and I think the world could do with a few more women at the centre of it if you ask me.”

Hugh Laurie, 57, scored the best supporting actor Golden Globe for his performance as bad guy Richard Roper in The Night Manager.

His co-star Hiddleston, 35, spoke about his humanitarian work and a recent trip he made to Sudan during his acceptance speech. He said: “The Night Manager is about arms dealing and there are far too many arms going into South Sudan.

“There’s a curfew at 6pm every night. Humanitarian aid workers have to be inside by six. One night, we were having a bite to eat at the canteen where we were staying. A group of young men and women wandered over to the table and they were a group from Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) and they wanted to say hello because during the shelling the previous month, they had binge-watched The Night Manager.

“And the idea that we could provide some relief and entertainment for the people who work for Unicef, Médecins Sans Frontières and the World Food Program who are fixing the world in the places where it’s broken, well, this is lovely.”

Meanwhile Olivia Colman, 42, won the best supporting actress Golden Globe for her performance as a British spy runner who recruits Hiddleston’s character in the BBC drama. She wasn’t there to accept the award.

Taylor-Johnson beat all the favourites, including fellow Brit Dev Patel, for the best supporting actor in a film Globe.

La La Land, which tells the story of a jazz pianist falling for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles, won in every category in which it was nominated.

It earned wins in the best original score motion picture and best original song motion picture categories. Damien Chazelle was also recognised for best screenplay motion picture and best director motion picture.

Gosling, 36, dedicated his win to girlfriend Eva Mendes and her brother who recently passed away from cancer.

Stone, 28, paid tribute to her mother, saying: “Thank you, mum, for everything.”
