Sergio Ramos petition: Mohamed Salah injury sees half a million people wanting Real Madrid star 'punished' for Champions League final challenge

Standard Sport3 August 2018

A petition calling for Uefa and Fifa to 'punish' Sergio Ramos for injuring Mohamed Salah in the Champions League Final has gathered over 500,000 signatures.

During Saturday's Champions League Final in Kiev, Ramos was seen to hang on to the Egypt international as the pair fell to the floor in a first-half challenge which resulted in the 44-goal Reds forward being forced off with shoulder ligament damage.

It was the turning point in the game as Real's confidence grew as Liverpool's waned on the way to a 3-1 defeat.

But it was not the only incident involving Ramos as he also appeared to catch goalkeeper Loris Karius in the face at a corner, and his theatrics contributed to Sadio Mane's second-half booking.

Egypt are optimistic Salah will be fit for the World Cup in three weeks and Ramos has tweeted a get well message.

"Sometimes football shows you it's good side and other times the bad. Above all, we are fellow pros. #GetWellSoon MoSalah," wrote Ramos.

However, a petition launched on change.org by a user named "Mohamed Salah Abdel-Hakeem" accuses Ramos of trying to "intentionally" hurt Salah, and passed the 500,000 barrier of signatures on Wednesday afternoon.

The petition says: "Uefa and Fifa should take measures against Ramos and similar players, using the video recordings of matches to keep the spirit of the game."

Uefa confirmed on Tuesday morning that Ramos would face no punishment for the incident involving Ramos and Karius, while also adding that no other protests had been lodged regarding the challenge between Ramos and Salah.

Meanwhile, an Egyptian lawyer has filed a €1 billion lawsuit against Ramos for the challenge which injured Salah.

Lawyer Bassem Wahba is keen to press ahead with the lawsuit, confirming his intention on Egyptian television channel Sada El-Balad: "Ramos intentionally injured Mo Salah and should be punished about his actions. I've filed a lawsuit and a complaint to Fifa.

"I'll ask for compensation, which could exceed €1 billion (£873 million), for the physical and psychological harm that Ramos gave Salah and the Egyptian people."

Following the Final, Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson refused to be drawn on whether Ramos' actions were deliberate, but said: "I think it is just how he (Salah) has landed but Ramos is quite clever, isn't he?

"We are clutching at straws if we are saying that. It's unfortunate. It just disrupted our rhythm a wee bit.

"He has done unbelievable this season and for it to end that way for him was devastating. I hope he goes to the World Cup because a nation is a relying on him.

"Hopefully he'll come back bigger and stronger."
