Chelsea's new left back Marcos Alonso believes he is better equipped to make a major impact in the Premier League at the third attempt.

The 25-year-old already knows what's in store having played nine times for Bolton when they were still in the top flight and Sunderland on loan from Fiorentina in 2014.

Sunderland wanted to make the deal permanent two years ago, but Alonso feels his decision to play the last two seasons in Serie A with Fiorentina has paid off.

He told Chelsea TV: "I am very happy to be here and to be back in the Premier League. It is a big decision, a big step in my career.

"I had the chance before, but I think it was a good thing for me to stay at Fiorentina. But when I knew about Chelsea, I said 'yes' in the first second I knew.

"I'm more ready than before and this is a very big thing. I think it's time to win trophies now and give my best to help the team.

"We have to fight for every competition. We have top players, we're a top club so we're going to try and win every competition we play."

The former Spain Under-19 international is confident it won't take him long to settle in at Stamford Bridge given he knows most of the squad and is a huge admirer of coach Antonio Conte.

He added: "I have played with Gary Cahill before [at Bolton] and I know some of the Spanish players as well. I know them all from playing against them. I just can't wait to get to know the lads and the staff.

"He [Conte] is a great manager. I have seen the great work he's done at Juventus and the [Italy] national team in the Euros.

"He likes to work hard and I am just really looking forward to start and to be with the team.

"I'm a left back so my priority is to defend, but I will try to help the team in attack as much as I can."
