Chelsea have signed their former defender David Luiz from Paris St Germain on a three-year deal on transfer deadline day.

Just two years after Jose Mourinho disposed of the Brazilian international in a £50m deal Luiz has returned to Stamford Bridge after new manager Antonio Conte sanctioned the remarkable signing.

The Blues have spent the summer chasing a centre-back but failed to bring in any of their leading targets on what became an extensive wish list that included Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Alessio Romagnoli of AC Milan.

Conte admitted on Friday that he feared he would not be able to acquire all his targets and Chelsea were forced to look far and wide in the closing days of the window, considering Stefan de Vrij and Angelo Ogbonna before settling on their former player.

Luiz departed Chelsea in 2014 after three-and-a-half seasons at Chelsea, making 143 appearances in all competitions and winning an FA Cup and Champions League trophy in 2012.

Though the defender was a popular figure with Chelsea fans Jose Mourinho had his doubts over Luiz soon after taking over in 2013, though others in the club hierarchy thought highly of a player with excellent skills on the ball.
