George Clooney has spoken out in support of Meryl Streep after Donald Trump dubbed her ‘over-rated’, saying that the country has been ‘unlucky’.

The Hollywood A-lister asked why the President-elect wasn’t concentrating on more important things, like ‘running the country’.

Speaking at an event for new documentary The White Helmets on Monday night, Clooney said:

“Aren’t you supposed to be running the country? I didn’t vote for him, I don’t support him, I don’t think he’s the right choice.”

The actor went on to say that he hopes Trump does a good job as president for the sake of the country.

“At this moment in our lives we have to hope that he doesn’t destroy everything,” he said.

“The reality is you have to hope he will do a decent job because if the United States fails, really terrible things happen, so you have to hope that he can. I don’t see any signs of it.

Clooney said that the US had been ‘lucky’ with its presidents in the past, adding: “When we needed a first president, we had George Washington.

“We had Jefferson, Adams. When we had the Civil War, we had Lincoln. We got a little unlucky with Bush.

“I think we’re going to be a little unlucky now.”

Trump hit back at Streep on Monday after she criticised him for mocking a disabled reporter during her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes.

In his tweet, he wrote: “Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a.....

“Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never "mocked" a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him.......

“"groveling" when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!”
