Beyonce has announced $100,000 scholarships to four historically black universities.

The Lemonade singer is set to use her initiative BeyGOOD to establish the Homecoming Scholars Award programme.

It will award $100,000 in scholarships to America’s Xavier, Wilberforce, Tuskegee and Bethune-Cookman universities.

Speaking about the new programme BeyGood boss Ivy McGregor said: “We salute the rich legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

“We honour all institutions of higher learning for maintaining culture and creating environments for optimal learning which expands dreams and the seas of possibilities for students.”

The news comes after the star made history at Coachella, becoming the first black woman to headline the music festival, one year after she was originally due to perform there.

The singer reunited with Destiny’s Child during her set on the second day of the star-studded festival in Indo, California in an “iconic” moment that delighted people across the globe.

As the star took the stage for her much-anticipated performance, fans renamed the festival 'Beychella' in a hashtag that was trending on Twitter.

The 36-year-old took the stage for her Coachella debut shortly after 11pm, opening with a marching band version of her hit Crazy in Love.

Beyoncé later sang a rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing, which is often referred to as the black American national anthem.
