Londoners are set for a cold and wet weekend as an icy blast makes way for heavy downpours.

Forecasters predicted a chilly Saturday following on from Friday’s cold spell before rain lashes down in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The capital is also poised to be hit by strong winds as up to 60mph gales batter the southern coast on Sunday.

The best of the weather is expected on Saturday afternoon with dry and sunny spells although Londoners have been advised to wrap up warm.

Met Office spokeswoman Emma Sharples said: “It will be a cold start on Saturday but it doesn’t look too bad to get out and about with some sunny spells although there is an odd chance of a shower.

“However on Saturday night we will see the weather start to change and going into Sunday it looks like it will be pretty wet.

“It will also be windy in London with winds of up to 60mph at southern coastal areas.

“Throughout Sunday the weather will start to clear but another area of low pressure near the south west means there could be more rain on Monday.”

Looking further ahead, the Met Office predicted an extended period of settled weather in the middle of next week.
