Harsh winds and cold temperatures are heading to London as the unseasonably warm Halloween weather looks to be over.

The Met office predicts a cold front will arrive in the capital tonight, with temperatures plunging to around 5C.

The south of England has enjoyed a relatively balmy few days with highs of 18C - but the colder weather in the north is approaching fast.

Temperatures during the latter stages of this week are expected to be around 11C, dipping to as low as 1C at points over Thursday and Friday nights.

A spokesman for the Met Office told the Standard: “There is quite a clear split at the moment with colder weather up north but that is going to change this week.

“The south has got a bit more cloud today but we are expecting the cold front to move south and come through in London overnight tonight.

“Towards the end of the week there may be some snow on higher ground in Scotland but that’s to be expected for this time of year. We aren’t predicting any snow for London just yet.”

He added: “It has been unseasonably warm over the last few days but we are now returning to more like what we would expect for this time of year.”

Other forecasters have announced the oncoming of a “more traditional” November period.

James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said: “The first notable wintry blast and potentially widespread snow showers will occur during the early part of November and there will also be ample amounts of fog and frost for many within this period too.”

Yesterday the Met Office issued a severe weather warning for the capital as Londoners woke up on Halloween to a blanket of eerie fog.
