Eamonn Holmes couldn’t resist mocking Richard Madeley over his “pumpkin-like” tan.

The This Morning host, who has been holding down the fort while regulars Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield enjoy the Easter break, teased the stand-in Good Morning Britain presenter as they opened Wednesday's show.

Holmes' wife, and co-host, Ruth Langsford quizzed her husband on whether he has any beauty tips, to which he quipped: “Drink plenty of water and don’t use false tan to excess. That’s what I’d say.”

Confirming he was taking a subtle swipe at Madeley, Holmes shook his head and said: “Some people…”

His savage comments came after Madeley was forced to address his complexion on-screen after he started trending on Twitter.

Apologising to viewers for looking “pumpkin-like,” Madeley revealed he had been in the south of France for two weeks. “I agree, it's looking a bit orangey. It could only be make-up but there is a tan underneath. Sorry everybody,” he said.

Holmes' remark came hours after social media users criticised him for his “cringe” interview with Avengers star Chris Hemsworth.

During the video link broadcast, Holmes told the Hollywood actor how his wife had been longing for him to come in to the studio, adding that she wanted to “see your hammer”.

Hemsworth looked awkward before joking that the hammer had been “destroyed in the last movie”.

Viewers slammed the host, with some even threatening to “switch off” over the “sexist” statement.

Earlier this week, Madeley made headlines after he suffered a blunder of his own as he accidentally swore on-air.

During an interview with The Voice winner Molly Hocking and her coach Olly Murs, Madeley attempted to ask Hocking about her shock win but accidentally let slip an inappropriate word.

He said: “Reality really kicks in when there’s a moment and you just say, “s*** I won!”

Completely unaware of his error, he later apologised admitting he “didn’t think” he had sworn.
