NTA nominations 2016: David Tennant and Aidan Turner go head to head and Downton Abbey takes on Doctor Who

Some of the biggest TV shows and stars have been nominated ahead of the annual bash

David Tennant and Aidan Turner will go head to head while Poldark will take on Doctor Foster at the 21st National Television Awards.

Nominations for the annual event – which welcomes the public to vote for the best shows and stars of the small screen – have been announced, and viewers will have to make some tough decisions.

Downton Abbey is pitted against Doctor Who for Best Drama, while 14 time winners Ant and Dec will face competition for the coveted TV Presenter gong from Graham Norton, Great British Bake Off’s Mel & Sue and This Morning regular Rylan Clark.

Sheridan Smith will be back to try and retain her Drama Performance title for her role in Black Work, but she faces tough competition from Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster), David Tennant (Broadchurch) and Aidan Turner (Poldark).

EastEnders and Coronation Street will lock horns in a bid to take home the Serial Drama gong while X Factor, The Voice, Britain's Got Talent and Strictly Come Dancing will battle for the Talent Show gong.

Viewers will also be able to vote for their favourite TV moment of the year, from Nadia's Bake Off win to Britain's Got Talent's tight rope walking dog and Poldark's topless scything.

Dermot O’Leary will host the bash as stars of the small screen descend on London’s O2.
