Wilkinson fears for his England place

13 April 2012

Jonny Wilkinson has admitted he will be playing for his England place against France on Saturday.

Wilkinson and at least a third of the team chosen by head coach Brian Ashton have been told they are on trial after stuttering displays against Wales and Italy. Ashton is ready to swing the axe and Wilkinson claims he has always felt pressure to perform.

Replacement: Jonny Wilkinson makes way for Danny Cipriani

The fly-half said: "If I didn't feel that way then maybe I would have enjoyed more sleep on Friday nights and less pain in the build-up to matches.

"It's not about holding on to your shirt, it's ensuring that every time you pull on that England jersey you give everything to the team. You do it because you care about what you are doing, not because you just want to be there.

"There is no reward from just running out in an England jersey unless you are going to show what you are about. Those shirts deserve to be on the backs of players who want to do it justice.î

In contrast to England, France have displayed adventure with the ball in hand in this Six Nations.

Wilkinson added: "The French are building a fantastic team."
