Wenger in attack on FIFA

Arsene Wenger believes Spain should have received a ban from European competition to teach the country's racist fans a lesson.

FIFA fined the Spanish Football Federation £44,750 on Tuesday for the racist taunts directed at England's black players like Ashley Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Jermaine Jenas and Rio Ferdinand during last month's international in Madrid.

But Wenger, who was fined £15,000 by the Football Association last week for calling Ruud van Nistelrooy a cheat, said: "If you take my fine as a basis or benchmark then it is too little. FIFA apply their own rules.

"I believe that in sport, the only punishments that help are sporting sanctions. I'm not a great believer that financial punishment will help to clear out the problem of racism."
