Wasps still need favours

13 April 2012

Wasps won the battle between second and third in the Zurich Premiership with an injury-time dropped goal from stand-off Alex King but are still looking for other clubs to boost their title chances.

Wasps and Northampton conceded, following the visitors' 21-18 win, that Leicester still remain favourites to retain the title.

Wasps' Director of Rugby, Nigel Melville, said: "We are depending on other people to beat Leicester.

"It's out of our hands, we are not playing them and it needs Gloucester and Northampton to beat them to make it interesting."

Saints boss John Steele was disappointed after his side's six-match winning run had ended.

"This is a massive blow to our hopes of catching Leicester," said Steele.

"They are still going to have to slip up a couple of times, maybe even three times, which they are not in the habit of doing. Any loss like this narrows our chances considerably."

Northampton had stormed into a 12-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes with four penalties from Paul Grayson.

But tries from flanker Joe Worsley and winger Paul Sampson left it all square at 15-15 at the interval.

"We went in at half-time not having played any rugby of any note and we seemed to want to sit on our lead," said Steele.

"We could have won it but I felt we would have been stealing it if we had. We just didn't deserve to win today."
