Wales call for prop Mitchell

Ospreys prop Craig Mitchell has been called into the Wales squad for Tests against South Africa and New Zealand next month.

Mitchell, who has won three caps, is promoted after Gethin Jenkins withdrew due to a calf muscle injury that could sideline him for up to six weeks.

Wales play world champions South Africa in Cardiff on Saturday week, then head to New Zealand for appointments with the All Blacks on June 19 and 26.

Mitchell's place on the stand-by list of players is taken by 20-year-old uncapped Cardiff Blues forward Scott Andrews.

"Craig knows all about our international environment and has been training with us all week in any case, so his transition will be pretty seamless," said Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde.

"He will primarily cover Adam Jones' side of the scrum, and with Paul James pretty comfortable on both sides and John Yapp also with some experience on either side, we think we still have a good balance there.

"Our front-row should be an experienced unit, with the likes of Adam and (hooker) Matthew Rees both returning from the Lions tour last summer with enhanced reputations, but the Springboks are by no means short on experience there themselves."

Wales head coach Warren Gatland is due to name his team for the South Africa clash next Tuesday.
