Unsettled Bruce set for shock return to Wigan

13 April 2012

Former Crystal Palace boss Steve Bruce is set to be named as the new manager at Wigan - six years after he walked out on the Lancashire club after less than two months in charge.

Bruce left Wigan when they were in Division Two after he received what chairman Dave Whelan described at the time as "an offer he could not refuse" from Palace chief Simon Jordan.

The 46-year-old then quit Selhurst Park when Birmingham came in for him four months later and he went back to St Andrews.

Now his second stint as Birmingham manager is coming to an end as he heads north to start a battle against relegation with Wigan second bottom of the Premier League.

Wigan had an initial approach to speak to Bruce turned down after Paul Jewell revealed that he was not interested in coming back to the JJB Stadium to replace Chris Hutchings, who was sacked earlier this month.

It is understood now, though, that Blues co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan have altered their stance.

Bruce is aware he could be out of a job in January should the takeover by the Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung go ahead.
