The Masters 2017 live: Sergio Garica wins at Augusta to end his long wait for a first major title

1/48

Sergio Garcia ended his long wait for a major title with victory at the Masters in Augusta.

In what was his 74th major, the Spaniard triumphed over Englishman Justin Rose to take the green jacket on an emotional day for the 37-year-old, on what would have been the late Seve Ballesteros’s 60th birthday.

"It is amazing," said Garcia after his triumph. "To do it on his [Seve's] 60th birthday and to join him and Jose Maria Olazabal, my two idols in golf, it is something amazing. Jose Maria texted on Thursday saying how much he believed in me and to believe in myself. Everybody has been great. My whole family, my fiance."

DATE, TIME AND VENUE

The Masters tournament starts on Thursday, April 6 and will run until Sunday, April 9.

The first Major of the season is staged at Augusta and will include four rounds - one each day, with half the field cut after two rounds.

If the leaders are tied after four rounds, a play-off will determine the overall winner and recipient of the green jacket. The players with matching scores will play holes 18 and 10 in rotation in a sudden death format.

Fitzpatrick ready to come of age and build on last year’s late run | By Matt Majendie

While the Masters story of 2016 was of Danny Willett’s unlikely victory and Jordan Spieth’s demise, another native of Sheffield was tearing up the course with a final-round 67.

Matt Fitzpatrick’s performance on that Sunday matched that of his fellow Yorkshireman but, not surprisingly, his seventh-place finish went relatively under the radar.

Mum and dad, Susan and Russell, will again be at Augusta, willing their son on to what would be his biggest success and, most likely, a first Masters winner to be still living with his parents.

“I always thought I’d win a Major but I didn’t think it would happen so soon,” says the 22-year-old. “I just hope this is the stage for it.”

Dustin Johnson is the hottest player on planet and man to beat | By John Huggan

In the minds of just about everyone walking the exclusive fairways of Augusta National this week, the world No1 Dustin Johnson will start his eighth attempt to win the Masters as favourite to don the famous Green Jacket come Sunday evening.

First in his past three tournaments, the 32-year-old South Carolinian is the hottest player on the planet as well as, statistically, the best.

Hang on though. We’ve been here before. Almost anyway. Just one year ago Jason Day arrived at Augusta National ranked the world’s best golfer. The Australian had won his previous two events. So who could stop the then USPGA champion from claiming a second successive Major title? Quite a few. As many as nine men hit fewer shots than Day, who failed to break 70 in any of his four rounds and finished tied for 10th, six strokes behind the eventual champion, Danny Willett.

Still, while nothing can ever be taken for granted in golf, it remains clear that Johnson is the man to beat this week.

Rory McIlroy heads the chasing pack in showdown of world’s best | By John Huggan

Given the recent emergence of Jon Rahm as one of golf’s elite players, things may change soon enough.

But for now at least the leading six names on the world-ranking list — Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama, Henrik  Stenson and Jordan Spieth — have significantly separated themselves from the rest.

The gap between No6 Spieth and No7, Justin Thomas, is currently more than two full points. In world ranking terms not quite the equivalent of an eight-shot victory, but close.

If anyone is going to stop No1 Johnson from winning the 81st Masters, the strong likelihood is that he will emerge from that tightly-knit pack of five snapping at the strapping South Carolinian’s soft-spiked heels.

Paul Casey knows he’ll be in contention to win in Augusta | By Matt Majendie

Sandy, Faldo, Woosie: the names roll off Paul Casey’s tongue as though any drive down Augusta’s gateway — Magnolia Lane — is a whimsical trip down memory lane.

Casey has his own memories of the Masters: four top-10 finishes and a best of fourth a year ago when he was one of three Englishman on the charge with a closing-round 67.

Casey tees off tomorrow three months shy of turning 40 but ranked 16th in the world, although only fourth in Britain, and he is confident of another charge from his compatriots.

“There are plenty of Brits playing some really good golf at the moment,” he tells Standard Sport. “There were six of us in last year’s top 10, so I don’t see why there can’t be another British surge this year.”
