British number one Johanna Konta to miss Charleston Open with shoulder injury and illness

Johanna Konta, Britain’s emerging tennis star, has announced her withdrawal from this week's Volvo Car Open in Charleston with a shoulder injury.

British number one Konta won the biggest title of her career in Miami on Saturday, beating Caroline Wozniacki to move up from 11 to seven in the WTA world rankings.

But the 25-year-old will not play in South Carolina, missing out with a "slight shoulder injury and sickness".

Konta said: "I'm very sorry to have to withdraw from Charleston. This is a great tournament, and I was really looking forward to taking part.

"I was battling a slight shoulder injury and sickness during Miami, which has taken hold since the end of the tournament."

Less than two years ago Konta was ranked 146th in the world but she has now set her sights on Grand Slam titles and the world number one ranking, currently held by German Angelique Kerber.
