Aljaz Bedene was today forced to retire for a second successive tournament because of an ongoing problem with his right knee.

The British No2 pulled out of his last-16 encounter against Roberto Bautista Agut in Beijing but bounced back at the subsequent Shanghai Masters to comfortably win his opening-round contest against Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-4.

Bedene, however, struggled almost from the outset of his second-round match against Alexander Zverev.

The 28-year-old was grimacing as he dropped to a rapid 4-0 deficit. At the end of game four and with his knee heavily strapped, he called quits on the contest.

There is now a question mark over whether Bedene will play again this season with the ongoing injury.

It was a seventh career retirement for Bedene and his third at a Masters 1000 event.
