Taylor remains unsatisfied despite triumph

13 April 2012

Phil Taylor was still not totally satisfied despite clinching a fourth World Matchplay title at Blackpool.

'The Power' beat Richie Burnett 18-10 to follow up his triumphs in 1995, 1997 and 2000.

But the nine times World Champion was disappointed he didn't make a nine-dart check-out during the final.

Taylor said: "Richie didn't hit his doubles, he gave me some chances and I took them.

"But he never gave up and came back with some big scores. He'll be back and he must hold his head high after the week he's had here.

"On paper the whole tournament should have been much closer as I think this has surpassed the world championship now because of the strength of the field. But I was under no pressure.

"One thing I'm gutted about, though, is not achieving a nine-dart checkout."

Burnett admitted he had been distracted by the partisan crowd cheering on Taylor, though he stressed it had not affected his game.

"It's very difficult for me to win in front of an English crowd," said the man who was Taylor's semi-final victim in Blackpool last year.

"I feel like they are taking the mickey out of me sometimes - it can be very intense. If I play aggressively, I feel like it all comes back at me.

"When Phil is banging in the big scores the stage can be a very lonely place to be. I'm sure I can overcome it but it is a handicap.

"I never felt right at all. I couldn't get my first dart in the treble 20 and the way I played it should really have been 18-0 to Phil.

"But I'm happy with the week I've had and I can build on this. I think darts needs Richie Burnett and I'm a determined sort of guy, so maybe next time I can win this."
