Sven votes for left-winger Heskey

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson will use Liverpool striker Emile Heskey out of position for tonight's World Cup qualifier against Greece.

Heskey will play on the left of midfield, despite looking unhappy there in England's 4-0 win over Mexico.

Steve McManaman, who missed that match because of club commitments with Real Madrid, was expected to return in place of Heskey for tonight's Group Nine clash.

However, Heskey has impressed in training and will get the nod over McManaman, who was disappointing in his most recent England display, against Albania.

The only other change from the team which began against Mexico will see Arsenal's David Seaman replacing Nigel Martyn, of Leeds, in goal. Martyn looks likely to be one of the substitutes, who will also include Tottenham's Teddy Sheringham and Leeds striker Alan Smith.

Eriksson and his squad are expecting the atmosphere to be hostile in the Olympic Stadium tonight but the 80,000-capacity venue will be less than half full.

Newcastle's Greek international defender Nikos Dabizas said: "The small crowd is a problem for us. England have full support from the fans even if they don't have success. That doesn't happen here."

Vassilis Daniil, the Greek coach, believes there is a new mood in his squad following Saturday's win over Albania.

"There is a new euphoria within the team," Daniil said. "We can win this game."

Meanwhille, new laws to clean up the image of English football abroad appeared to be working today as around 6,000 England fans headed to the Olympic Stadium.

More than 450 suspected troublemakers were stopped from travelling to Greece for the game after they were ordered to surrender their passports to police in Britain.

The orders were issued as part of the new Football Disorder Bill and by lunchtime today there had been no reports of trouble.

Peter Millett, from the British Embassy, said: "Neither the police or any individuals have been in touch about any incidents and no one arriving here has been turned away."
