Surrey fight to keep young star

Surrey coach Keith Medlycott is trying to persuade allrounder Gareth Batty to stay at The Oval after being courted by Essex and Worcestershire.

Batty, who has been on the staff for three seasons, has been offered a new contract, but the 24-year-old Yorkshireman wants more first- team cricket.

Understudy to Saqlain Mushtaq, he played several significant innings in one-day cricket later in the season and took wickets with his off-spin, but his first-class appearances have been rare.

His elder brother Jeremy played for Yorkshire and Somerset.
