Strachan is close to taking on Leeds job

Gordon Strachan could be appointed Leeds United manager as early as next week after Southampton gave permission for him to begin talks with the club.

The former Leeds skipper is out of contract at the end of the season and his relationship with Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe has reportedly become prickly.

Strachan will want assurances about Leeds' ambitions and to be given a significant transfer budget before agreeing to return there.
