Steffon Armitage release is a big boost for Lewis Moody

Steffon Armitage's hopes of holding on to the England No7 jersey do not look good after team manager Martin Johnson agreed to release the London Irish flanker for the Guinness Premiership match with Harlequins.

Lewis Moody is now favourite to appear at open side against Australia on 7 November. Three other players - Richard Blaze and Ben Kay (both Leicester Tigers) and David Strettle (Harlequins) - have also been released.

Blaze and Kay are being given more game time before the 32-man squad comes together again on 1 November and, with cover at wing and in the back row within the squad, Strettle and Armitage will now meet when Irish travel to play Quins on Saturday.
