St Louis Rams, the defending Superbowl champions, saw their hopes of retaining their crown ended by the New Orleans Saints.
The Rams battled back from a 24-point deficit but a muffed punt ended their hopes of a return to the season's showpiece.
In his first post-season start, Aaron Brooks passed for four touchdowns, including three to Willie Jackson, as the Saints held on for a 31-28 victory in the NFC wildcard game in New Orleans.
