Olympic medallist Lutalo Muhammad today called on his fellow Londoners to celebrate Team GB’s record-breaking haul at Rio 2016 by taking part in the biggest-ever sports day.

The 25-year-old, who won silver in the 80kg taekwondo final, will be one of Britain’s Rio heroes meeting the public tomorrow at the I Am Team GB event.

Venues across London and the UK will offer experiences for budding Olympians, as organisers seek to get more people into sport. It is being run by the National Lottery and ITV, which will switch off its channels for an hour on Saturday to encourage involvement.

Londoners will have the chance to play handball at the Copper Box, where Muhummad will be posted. He said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to get involved in all the Olympic sports. My message to young people is to get out there and get active.”

Muhammad, dubbed the “Walthamstow Warrior”, will also be officially welcomed back tonight from Rio with music, food and sporting activities in Walthamstow’s town square. “Many of us in Walthamstow stayed up into the small hours to will Lutalo on and we are so proud of everything he has achieved,” said local MP Stella Creasy.

In October, a major event or parade will be held in central London to celebrate the Team GB athletes. Lily Owsley, 21, who won gold with the hockey team, said of I Am Team GB: “We may even find the next Jess Ennis-Hill.”

Visitors to the Copper Box will be able to meet double gold medallist Max Whitlock, as well as equestrian gold and silver medallist Charlotte Dujardin. The arena will be hosting handball, a bike and rowing challenge, gymnastics, table tennis and athletics.

Those hoping to emulate Andy Murray can take part in a tournament at the Islington Tennis Centre. Other activities include a training session on Clapham Common. Gymnastics star Whitlock, 23, said: “I’d encourage everyone to get involved.”
