On the record with Richard Kruse

British fencing hopeful Richard Kruse talks to the Evening Standard's Olympics correspondent Matt Majendie

Sport: Fencing

Record holder? Kruse had just one chance left to earn an automatic qualifying spot for London 2012 in the foil last week and it meant winning an event in Copenhagen, Denmark. The 28-year-old Londoner did just that by beating Italian Francesco Trani to land an extra spot to the eight Olympic fencing berths Team GB have at the Games as a host nation.

Off the record: When not on the piste, Kruse plays the bagpipes and can be seen and heard playing the instrument with regularity in his local park in Whetstone. His other main hobby is the martial art of Wing Chun, made famous by Bruce Lee.

Chance of an Olympic record? Kruse appears to be recapturing some of the best form of his career that took him to No 5 in the world in 2009. Should he get on a good run, a medal is conceivable.
