Singh on tail of surprise leader

13 April 2012

Masters champion Vijay Singh kept alive his hopes of back-to-back victories on the European Tour in the Caltex Singapore Masters.

Singh added a second round 63 to his opening 64 at Singapore Island Country Club for a 15-under-par total of 127, two shots behind surprise leader Frankie Minoza of the Philippines.

Minoza fired a brilliant 10-under-par 61, just one shot outside the lowest round ever recorded on the European Tour.

It gave Minoza a total of 125, 17-under-par, and the lowest sub-par total for the first 36 holes in the tour's 30 years. Ireland's Padraig Harrington shot a 67 to finish 12 under and in third place alongside Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng.

England's Warren Bennett, joint leader overnight, hit a second round 69 to lie joint seventh on 10-under-par alongside Wales' Mark Mouland, one ahead of Colin Montgomerie.

Sergio Garcia of Spain shot a five-under-par 66 to take the joint lead after the first round of the Nissan Open at Pacific Palisades in California.

He was level with Brent Schwarzrock, Tom Scherrer and last year's winner Kirk Triplett at the Riviera Country Club.

Nick Price and Davis Love were three shots back. Tiger Woods shot a disappointing, even-par round of 71. Aaron Baddeley's poor putting let pre-tournament favourite Michael Campbell, who shot a second-round 64, move back into contention at the Australasian Tour Championship in Sydney.

New Zealander Richard Lee matched compatriot Campbell's round at the Concord Golf Club. But Baddeley hit an even-par 71 as his five-stroke lead from the first round was cut to just one over Australian Peter Lonard (67-67) and Lee.

Campbell, after shooting an opening 75, is six shots off the pace.

Baddeley said: "I hit it good today, better than yesterday.

"I've just got to get a couple of yardages right tomorrow and hole a few putts and I should be right."
