Scarlets bury the Ulster bid

Llanelli booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup, inflicting Ulster's biggest defeat at Ravenhill.

The highly fancied Welsh region extended their unbeaten run, overturning an 11-7 deficit with five tries to heap more misery on Ulster, who have seen lock Matt McCullough charged with making racist comments in their two previous European ties.

Sale will have all eyes on Swansea's Liberty Stadium after a 29-11 win in Calvisano sent them to the top of Pool Three.

The English champions will hope the Ospreys beat Stade Francais to set up their crunch clash with the Welsh region on Saturday, when they will be without No 8 Nathan Bonner-Evans who was injured in Italy.

Two tries from Oriol Ripol and one each from Chris Mayor and man-of-thematch Ben Foden earned Sale the bonus point.

McCullough will be hauled before a disciplinary committee for alleged comments at London Irish player Delon Armitage later this month, but their faint Cup hopes are well and truly over. Alix Popham, Regan King, Morgan Stoddart, Dwayne Peel and Gavin Thomas all went over as Llanelli made Ulster pay for not making the most of torrential conditions in the first half.

Llanelli director of rugby, Phil Davies, said: "I'm very happy with the result and we've put ourselves in a very strong position. The players showed character, intensity and real efficiency and the result was that we came away with maximum points. That was very satisfying, given the conditions."

Tommy Bowe went over and Paddy Wallace added a penalty as Ulster went 8-0 ahead in the first 15 minutes but they failed to build on that advantage.
