Sampras edges past Ferreira

Pete Sampras was given a rough ride before finally overcoming South Africa'sWayne Ferreira in the first round of the Masters Series event in Toronto.

Ferreira went into the match with a strong record in matches against the 13-times Grand Slam winner and again gave the American problems before losing 7-6, 5-7, 6-4.

Sampras said: "It was very tight. I thought we both played really well. It was a high level of tennis."

Second-seed Marat Safin defeated Juan Ignacio Chela 6-4, 6-3 and now faces defending champion Andrei Pavel after his opponent Gustavo Kuerten was forced to retire due to injury.
