Eddie Jones insists Harlequins wing Marland Yarde will give Grand Slam champions England the try-scoring power they need to beat Wales on Sunday and clinch a first Test series triumph in Australia next month.

Yarde has been picked for the squad to face Wales at Twickenham and in the 32-strong tour party for Australia at the expense of Saracens wing Chris Ashton, who scored two tries as the Premiership champions beat Leicester 44-17 to reach the play-off final against Exeter on Saturday.

Yarde, 24, told Standard Sport recently: “When you are trying to get into the England squad, everyone will do whatever they can to get on that tour.

“You cannot afford to slip up once with the quality of wings pushing for selection, and when I am playing at my best, then I know I will make it hard for the selectors not to pick me.”

Yarde, who won the first of his seven caps against Argentina in 2013, has scored four tries for England, including in successive Tests against the All Blacks in New Zealand in 2014.

Jones broke the news to Ashton yesterday and said: “Any time you tell a player they’re out of a squad they’re disappointed. He knows what he has to do to improve his game.

“Chris Ashton has finished tries at club level and done very well. Marland has got a lot of growth in him.

“He’s a young player, probably maybe got his first cap too early, maybe didn’t realise how important it was to work hard.

“He is now working hard on his game and he is the sort of wing we want.

“I always go back to the New Zealand game that England nearly won [27-28], when Marland scored that try when he ran over the top of Richie McCaw.

“If a kid can do that, he’s got potential, so I have had a special interest in him. I think he can become a really good all-round player.”
