Rogge: Athens is ready

13 April 2012

Athens is ready to stage a successful Olympic Games, Jacques Rogge said today.

Rogge, who was the International Olympic Committee's chief inspector when Athens was warned it risked losing the Games due to delays four years ago, said organisers would keep their promises for a safe and successful Olympics.

"I am sure that Athens is ready and we know that the promises will be kept," said Rogge just nine days before the opening ceremony.

Rogge, who was greeted by Athens Games organising committee chief Gianna Angelopoulos and Greek National Olympic Committee president Lambis Nikolaou, will meet Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis today.

Organisers have rushed to complete venues and infrastructure projects in recent months.

But Karamanlis said yesterday Greece was fully prepared to host a successful Games.
