Roddick shows why he is top of the bill in Paris

13 April 2012

Top seed Andy Roddick demolished Armenia's Sargis Sargsian 6-2, 6-2 to ease into the third round of the Paris Masters.

The American world No2, topping the bill in the absence of Roger Federer, needed only 51 minutes to sail through against an opponent who had already put out Sweden's Thomas Johansson.

"I could not have hoped for more," said Roddick who is back in action after a month off. In contrast, Marat Safin, Paris champion in 2000 and 2002, had a shaky start before beating Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.

"I was struggling a little bit during the whole match, but I fought," the Russian said. Tim Henman bids for a fourth-round place later today when he takes on Russian Mikhail Youzhny, winner of last week's event in St Petersburg.
