Rival's boost for Carney

Great Britain rugby league winger Brian Carney has been boosted by a former Australian Test player as he prepares to face the Kangaroos on Saturday.

The strong-running Irishman, a big hit in last year's Ashes Series, has endured a nightmare season with Wigan and will go into the Gillette Tri-Nations match at the City of Manchester Stadium with just 10 minutes of play in the past six weeks after a broken ankle and a hamstring injury.

But, according to former team-mate and ex-Kangaroo stand-off Matthew Johns, the enforced lay-off could pay dividends.

"It's been a frustrating season but Matty says all it's done is keep the miles off the clock, that's the benefit I'll get," said Carney. "Matty's my mentor."
