Redknapp hopeful of Kanu deal

12 April 2012

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is hopeful Nigerian striker Kanu will sign a new one-year contract.

Redknapp has put the same deal on the table that the 31-year-old has signed both seasons following his move to Fratton Park from West Brom in 2006, with a set number of appearances triggering a new contract offer.

"Kanu hasn't got a bigger fan in the world than me," Redknapp told the club website, www.portsmouthfc.co.uk.

"I took him from West Brom when a lot of people said he was finished, but he's been fantastic for Portsmouth.

"But, like anybody, he's not getting any younger. Every year he's signed a one-year deal and if he plays a certain amount of games, he gets another year. He'll probably still be here when I'm long gone.

"Hopefully the deal will be sorted because I want to keep him at Portsmouth because I love him - he's a fantastic man and a great footballer."

Kanu has scored 19 goals for Pompey, including the winner in the FA Cup final last season, but could find chances harder to come by this season with Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe set to be first choice.
