Pipe makes powerful Tripleprint challenge

13 April 2012

Martin Pipe's policy of ' blanket' entries for jump racing's top prizes, continues with the news that the champion trainer has supplied 13 of the 42 possible challengers for the £100,000 Tripleprint Gold Cup, to be run at Cheltenham on Saturday week.

Cyfor Malta, who made a triumphant comeback from injury at Newbury last Saturday, heads Pipe's list with Shooting Light, Exit Swinger and Cadougold also entered.

The latter trio were first, third and fourth respectively for the Nicholashayne trainer in the Thomas Pink Gold Cup at the Prestbury Park track last month.

Pipe, successful in previous runnings of the 'Tripleprint' with Fragrant Dawn (1993) and Northern Starlight (1998), backs up the above quartet with Gun'n Roses II, Ilnamar, Imperial De Thaix, Iris Bleu, Lady Cricket, Dark Stranger, Royal Predica, Tresor De Mai and Upgrade.

A re-run of the Thomas Pink is on the cards as runner-up Foly Pleasant has been put in by Henrietta Knight. The Wantage trainer's other possible is Be My Manager.

Edward O'Grady gave the Irish their first success in this race since 1971 last year when Go Roger Go held Robbo by a neck.

There are two Irish entries this time round - Lyreen Wonder and More Than A Stroll - both from Arthur Moore's County Kildare yard. Lyreen Wonder, a recent winner at Navan, was still going strongly in second when tumbling at the tenth fence in last season's 'Tripleprint' and More Than A Stroll demonstrated his ability with a win in the Kerry National Handicap Chase at Listowel in September.

Jonjo O'Neill may be represented by Legal Right. Two years ago this talented but injuryprone chaser won the 'Tripleprint' by no less that 22 lengths.

Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson have both made a quartet of entries. The former could be represented by Fadalko, who is a leading candidate for the Queen Mother Champion Chase at next year's Cheltenham Festival, as well as Irbee, Whitenzo and Young Devereaux. Henderson's four entries are Geos, who made an excellent British chasing debut when runner- up to Edredon Bleu in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon, Goguenard, Ceanannas Mor, and Dusk Duel.

Peter McNeile, Cheltenham's Commercial Manager, said: "The Tripleprint Gold Cup has attracted a very strong entry. The Thomas Pink Gold Cup provided racegoers with a thrilling spectacle and we are delighted that the first four protagonists could run again in the Tripleprint Gold Cup."
