Pietersen makes a point but Harmison rules out return

Kevin Pietersen expects to have a say in England's one-day strategy from now on, but one thing he will not have any influence over is a Steve Harmison return to limited-overs international cricket.

Pietersen was one of those considered as new England captain in oneday cricket, before Paul Collingwood's elevation for this week's Twenty20 matches and series against the West Indies.

Yesterday he revealed he will have an input into tactics — "I do see that coming my way, it's something I'm looking forward to" — but his suggestion that Harmison should come out of limited-overs retirement was met with a polite "No".

The England pace spearhead produced his best spell of the summer in the final Test win against the West Indies at the Riverside, despite carrying a hernia that will need surgery.

But Harmison said: "I've made my decision and I'm sticking to it. I believe that looking after myself better, and curtailing some of the travelling and touring that goes with playing both forms of the game, will help me be a better bowler in Test cricket."

England are expected to pick Jonathan Trott and Owais Shah to open in the Twenty20 games, with one of them earning a place in the one-day internationals.
