Pierce woos locals on old patch

Mary Pierce, a Montreal native, defeated Germany's Marlene Weingartner 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round of the Montreal Cup tournament.

Pierce remains a crowd favourite despite the fact she left the city as a child to live in France and does not have any memories of her time in Canada.

"It's nice to come back to the city where I was born," she said. "The people really gave me a very warm welcome."

Pierce moved up to 17th seed because top seed Serena Williams pulled out with a knee injury.
