With the "Deflategate" ban lifted, Tom Brady was back in the groove for the New England Patriots as they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 28-21 to open the NFL season.

The quarterback could have been on the sidelines at Gillette Stadium last night, and for the next three games, had a court not overturned a League suspension in the row over deflated game balls, but the four-time Super Bowl winner got back to what he does best – winning games.

He threw four touchdowns and in his 288 yards on just 28 attempts.

One of his favourite go-to guys, tight end Rob Gronkowski, finished with 94 yards receiving, three touchdowns and a fumble recovery to remind the other 31 teams in the NFL exactly who the reigning Super Bowl champions are.

Kicker Josh Scobee missed two field goals for the Steelers, so that was six points that went begging, but on the positive side quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looked good and passed for 351 yards.

Brady ran out onto the field to a big ovation before the game and the crowd sang "Where is Roger?" in the fourth quarter, a playful dig at NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who chose not to attend the game after Judge Richard Berman reversed that four-game ban.

No need for them to chant "Where is Tom?" He’s back in business.
