US Open champion Dustin Johnson does not want to be paired with Phil Mickelson during the opening two days of the next week’s Ryder Cup.

The two men are firm friends and played together at Celtic Manor in 2010 but lost both of their matches.

“I love Phil but we have a lot more fun when we’re playing against each other, not as partners,” Johnson said ahead of the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Both regularly play together in practice rounds ahead of tournaments but Johnson says he has learned his lesson. “We wanted it [in 2010]. We thought it would be great but we played like c**p.”

Johnson’s remarks may reflect a deeper uncertainty in the American team.

The 32-year-old seems to still be unsure who he will be partnering at Hazeltine, while US skipper Davis Love won’t even reveal his final pick until Sunday evening.
