Double Olympic champion Mo Farah has told people to lay off an American television presenter who mistakenly asked him if he'd ever run before.

The 5,000m and 10,000m gold medalist was being interviewed by WDSU anchor LaTonya Norton yesterday after winning the New Orleans half-marathon when she asked him: "Haven't you run before? This isn't your first time?"

The interview quickly became a favourite across the internet as viewers watched Farah maturely deal with his questioner.

Farah tweeted today: "Just wanna say to everyone being nasty to LaTonya Norton please stop!! She made a mistake like we all do!! She didn't mean anything by it!"

A statement from WDSU said: "We express our sincere apology to Mr Farah and his many fans who may have been offended by our error.

"We hope that Mr Farah will have occasion to visit New Orleans again and that we may have the opportunity to apologise in person."
