Team boss Martin Whitmarsh wants Fernando Alonso back at McLaren and has questioned whether the Spaniard’s partnership with Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari next season will work.

Alonso, who left McLaren in 2007, has been linked with a return to the team but they are set to stick with Jenson Button and Sergio Perez.

“I think most teams would happily sign Fernando,” said Whitmarsh.

“I expect next year our line-up to stay the same but in the longer term he would be a great asset. I think people were surprised with the recruitment of Kimi. Not because Kimi is not massively talented or that they’re surprised that Kimi would want to go to Ferrari. Whether it is a sustainable line-up I don’t know.”

Button revealed he is set to sign a new deal with McLaren. “I’ll be here next year,” said the 33-year-old.

Alonso finished seventh in today’s first practice for Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton first.
