Jose’s Ryder Cup team taking shape

16 August 2012

Europe team captain Jose Maria Olazabal today named Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn and Paul McGinley as three of his four vice-captains for the defence of the Ryder Cup against the United States next month.

The trio, along with Olazabal, worked together as vice-captains under Colin Montgomerie’s leadership at Celtic Manor in Wales two years ago.

“Their passion, commitment and desire to win will encourage everyone in the team room,” said Olazabal, who will confirm the 12 players in his team following next week’s Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Clarke believes the experience of the backroom team will be vital to Europe’s chances at the Medinah Country Club near Chicago.

He said: “We have been there and done it before. We’ll be seeking to use our experience to re-create that terrific team spirit that has made the European team room such a special place to be.”
