Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor predictions: Anthony Joshua, Mike Tyson, Chris Eubank and more

Standard Sport26 August 2017

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor’s mega-fight is now tantalisingly close as the star duo prepare to meet in the Las Vegas ring on Saturday night.

The fight, reportedly earning the fighters upwards of $100m each, is set to become the richest in boxing history, breaking earnings and PPV records along the way.

Ahead of the fight, top names from the world of boxing have been voicing their opinions, with the vast majority taking Mayweather’s corner.

Anthony Joshua

"He's coming out of his field and going into Mayweather's domain. Even though he's an excellent fighter in UFC, he's not an excellent boxer. Him crossing over is going to be a real, big challenge.

"He could give a good account of himself; I think Mayweather will win but as long as he gives a good account of himself, it'll work really well for him.”

Ricky Hatton

“I feel embarrassed to say this but I'd be very surprised if (McGregor) wins a round,” Hatton told the Daily Mail.

“I hope he does well, I hope he wins; there's no doubt whose corner I'm in, but if you're asking me to be brutally honest I can't see anything other than a shut-out for Mayweather.”

Chris Eubank

“Is he [Mayweather] taking it seriously? Yes, he is.

“But, I want to know is he training with the intensity that he should be? If he’s not training with that intensity then he may be in trouble, that is why it’s a very interesting fight.”

Mike Tyson

"McGregor is going to get killed boxing," Tyson told the Pardon My Take podcast.

"I got mad because I thought they were going to use MMA rules against boxing because that’s what it’s all about: Can the boxer beat the MMA guy?

"McConor [sic] put his dumb ass in a position where he’s gonna get knocked out because [Mayweather has] been doing this all his life since he was a baby.”

Amir Khan

”I think it’s going to be a one-sided fight,” Khan told iFL TV.

”Mayweather is going to make him miss. He’s going to hurt him when he wants. He’s going to play with him. This could be Mayweather’s first stoppage in a long time. He [McGregor] throws it slow, and he shows he’s going to throw a punch as well,”

David Haye

“My prediction is Mayweather Jr to stop Conor McGregor in six rounds possibly on his feet," Haye told Betfair.

"I don’t think it will take long. McGregor is used to getting taken down and he’s used to people kicking him, so his defensive mode won’t be that of a boxer.

"I believe if Mayweather Jr puts a cluster of punches together he will stop McGregor on his feet in a pretty comfortable manner."

Tony Bellew

“Don’t get me wrong, if Mayweather vs. McGregor was in a cage it would be over within a minute,” Bellew told Fighters Only Magazine.

“McGregor would grab hold of Mayweather and eat him alive. He’d hurt Floyd with those four-ounce gloves. He’d do damage. But it’s not in a cage, it’s in a boxing ring.”

Carl Froch

“The thing with Mayweather is that he is good in every department,” Froch told Sky Sports

“He can stand and fight, take you on up close or on the back foot.

“His counter-punching, especially with the right hand is second to none, I've never seen a punch like it before.

“McGregor likes to box and stays on his feet more than most MMA fighters. He needs to get close to Mayweather and really use his height and extra weight.

"McGregor is also only 29, which will help him recover faster than Mayweather as the fight goes on."

Tyson Fury

"I think McGregor will do him in one round," Fury told iFL TV.

"I think he will knock him out inside the first 35 seconds like he did to Jose Aldo, to be honest.

"It would be good for boxing if McGregor chinned him. It would be great for the real people of the world."
