Andy Murray won his opening match at the ATP World Tour Finals on Monday, playing on an indoor hard court less than two weeks before he will have to switch to indoor clay for the Davis Cup final.

Murray beat David Ferrer 6-4, 6-4 at the O2 Arena, overcoming an early break in the second set.

In the late match at the season-ending tournament, Rafael Nadal will take on French Open champion Stan Wawrinka.

Murray was able to win with plenty of help from Ferrer's serve. The seventh-seeded Spaniard had eight double-faults and landed only 49 per cent of his first serves.

The win ensures Murray remains on course to end the year as the world number two should he secure another victory at the World Tour Finals this week.

After the ATP finals, Murray will start to prepare for the Davis Cup final against Belgium. The best-of-five series will be played on indoor clay in Gent between 27 and 29 November.
