Only the best for Wenger

Arsene Wenger insists he will only add only "super, super class" or nothing to his Arsenal squad this summer.

Arsenal were linked with a big-money move for Southampton starlet Gareth Bale during January, but did not dip into the transfer market at all and Wenger maintains he is unlikely to make many waves this summer - and only if the right player comes along.

He said: "Maybe one or two maximum - and only super, super class because we have what is needed. If someone is available I would always try to improve my team - but the basis is inside the club."

Wenger revealed no decision had yet been made on whether to secure Brazil forward Julio Baptista on a permanent basis from Real Madrid, with the loan swap deal involving Jose Antonio Reyes lasting only until the end of the season.

The Arsenal manager, however, does believe veteran goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will still be at the club come August.

Lehmann is out of contract in the summer, and as yet there has been no formal agreement with the Germany international - who turns 38 in November - over a new deal, with the two sides said to be at loggerheads over the length of the terms.

But Wenger said: "I expect him to be here. We have not gone into deeper discussions yet."

The Gunners head to Aston Villa on Wednesday night looking to leapfrog Liverpool into third place in the Barclays Premiership and put themselves back in the driving seat for Champions League qualification.

Despite a troubled campaign, the Arsenal manager feels it will all have served to make the current squad stronger.

He said: "Maybe in the future we will look back at this season and think that is where we built a real team for the future. That is what I hope."
