New twist in Tyson saga

David Smith13 April 2012

Mike Tyson's hopes of meeting Lennox Lewis in the biggest fight in boxing history have been dealt a new blow.

The £70 million contest for the world heavyweight championship cannot go ahead as planned in Las Vegas on 6 April unless Tyson receives the necessary licence to box in the state of Nevada.

He is due to have his licence application considered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Tuesday. But after this week's brawl at a press conference in New York, the commission's chairman Luther Mack said: "I'm just one man with one vote, but I think Tyson's licensing is in serious jeopardy based on my talks with some of the other commissioners."

The NSAC will not only consider Tyson's outrageous behaviour in New York, which included a foul-mouthed racist tirade, but there is also the possibility that Tyson will face a new charge of rape, alleged to have been committed at his Las Vegas home.

Tyson has already served three years behind bars after being found guilty of rape in 1992. In the light of the latest developments, Mack believes the commission have three choices.

He said: "We can choose to licence him, not to licence him, or licence him conditionally based on the evidence presented before us."
