Nethercott: Club has been hasty

14 April 2012

Stuart Nethercott says he believes Millwall bowed too easily to pressure from supporters in parting company with Mark McGhee.

The 30-year-old former Tottenham defender, who has been with the club since 1997, said today: "I'm very surprised. We're 14 league games in. Is that a fair enough ride, given that we're sitting in eighth spot?

"The fans were getting restless and made their feelings known. Maybe sitting in eighth spot is not good enough for this club. We've not been playing well but we've still been picking up results, it's just the way we've been playing wasn't pretty. The supporters had just had enough last night. It's a sad day."

Former Millwall striker Tony Cascarino said: "Chairman Theo Paphitis did it before with Keith Stevens and in my opinion that was an even bigger shock than with Mark McGhee.

"Maybe now the club need to look for someone with the stature of George Graham, but it's possible they will take their time in bringing in a new manager."

McGhee joined Millwall three years ago and led the club to promotion from the Second Division during his first season in charge.

The Scot followed that by helping the Lions reach the play-off semi-finals the following season, where they lost to Birmingham over two legs. But the former Wolves boss endured a difficult campaign last season, finishing eight points outside the top six after taking two points from their first five games.
