Murray set for tough test

12 April 2012

Andy Murray is bracing himself for a step up in class when he faces Nikolay Davydenko in the Pacific Life Open fourth round after routine wins in his first two matches.

Having beaten Wesley Moodie in the second round, Murray enjoyed a comfortable 6-1 6-3 win against Frenchman Nicolas Mahut to secure a showdown with Davydenko.

"I have played him three times," Murray said. "I lost the first two - I lost here actually last year in the third round - but I beat him in Doha earlier this year quite comfortably."

He added: "He's one of the best ball-strikers in the game, he returns great and it will be a completely different match to my first two, as he is a slightly better player.

"He doesn't have the big serve, his main weapon is his returns and his defence. I'll have to play great if I want to win against him."

Murray has his best chance yet to win a maiden Masters Series title after world number one Roger Federer was spectacularly beaten by Guillermo Canas at the weekend - though the Scot played down the significance of the world number one's exit.

He said: "I just have to concentrate on one match at a time, I've got a really tough section. Federer was in a different part of the draw so it doesn't really affect me. I've just got to play some really good tennis."
